How to get things done, Less is More philosophy

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Lately I got buried with tons of work, as a white-collar worker we are just bound to do/make things to make money. While being in this state, it seems for me that time is always in the essence and vital to accomplish all pending works. Like all trials in life, we struggle, learn, and succeed. We become strong and found ready-made solution that will serve as tools to help us in our future trials.

How to get thigns done, Less is More philosophy

“Less Work, More Work”

This is what I think first before I start a project, “Less Work, More Work” may sound contradicting to you but its an effective mindset to start with. Now why “Less Work, More Work”?

It basically means, Less Time to finish a job and More time to some more. Lesser time to do things, means more time do more. Ergo, your productivity rate will increase and “grace” you will get. Analyze first your gameplan on how to fnish the project and you will find that you will be saving a lot of time of doing it. You will soon realize, “I’m done, …Next!” :)

The Solution of Complexity is Simplicity, embracing the KISS rule

Like what I said in “I’m always out of time”, KISS rule is essential also to save you more time. Life is just making a “program”, it’s a yes or no choice,  if don’t make things simple then things will get really complex.

Love what you do, if you don’t then get out of it.

If you don’t love what you do, indeed you will get bored. Life is really offering a lot of options to choose or decide from. Fascinate with the problem, be amazed with it, picture out how good will it be after “you” getting it “done”. Creative people don’t find motivation, they motivate themselves. You are what you are and we only have one shot in life, live it to the fullest by making small things such as work to gain confidence and happiness in life. Just think what I said about simplicity, more work to be done – more money – and more money will lessen your financial burden. I’m not telling you to be materialistic but let’s face it. Money is essential in our generation, now that we (the whole world) is facing economic crisis. Not just you help yourself, your family but also the economy itself.

Optimize your mind

Seriously, the human body is the perfect computer. We have the ability to “defrag” ourselves, remove things that clutter us to be productive. Clear away all distractions during work: email, youtube, IM or anything that eats one or more minutes of your time while working.

In this state, you may say “this will overwork me, will get me bored”. I know, and I also suggest allocate some time to free your mind. Play games, take a nap, watch something funny just to revitalize your mind.  Just do these things to put gas in your engine, don’t do this frequently though. Limit this, but make sure to make out of it. Patch Adams, advocates “Laughter is the best medicine, happiness removes illness”. It also applies on recharging your “mind battery”. Laughter is an  all in one medication for the mind, the body and the soul to be strong.

Focus on one project, and you will realize that its done. You will be craving for more, but you will not be one of those “workaholic-killing-my-body” type. Think, I work to make my body, life, and family better.

Finally, reward yourself. Take a good nap, eat w/ the family, dance with your wife/husband. Watch pixar/disney movies with your kid like “Ratatouile”, “Bolt” or “Chicken Little” (my kid’s favorite).

or just grin away looking at the project done.

and start the evil laugh… bwa hahahaha hahaha haha! >:)

I’m always out of time

“I wish I have more time”

“If only I can buy time…”

“If only I have time for everything…”

Sometimes these are the words I whisper to my mind. I haven’t blog for awhile, I always catch up on things needed to be done. I got to thinking, why is this happening?

For we all know, when we aged we realized that it seems we are lacking of time.  Time for family, work, laundry, so on and so forth.  I remember when I was a kid, summer vacation seems so long and christmas felt endless.  After school year is over, being a kid I was, felt I was out of prison.  Kids don’t think of problems except of “if I did wrong, parents will get mad”, or “how can I ask my parents for things like toys I want”, or things to be done in school.

But now, holidays are only dayoff from work, christmas and new years seems like 2 months away. And they felt like burden for expenses and financial balancing troubles.

You Have Time For Everything

Don’t spend time just working and being busy.
You will always complain about lack of time.

Instead put little bit of effort; Plan & organize your life.
You will realize that you have time for everything.

A quote from pravsworld.com

Simple, and it makes sense. Here’s another one,

You cannot make time for everything, you have to prioritize
Your “IN” basket will never empty.
Your kids don’t need anything special, just play a board game will be enough.

The kids just want you attention, so is it more important to clean or to spend good quality time with the kids?
You just need to choose. Life is just filled with choices.

One thing I learn from this quote is that the rule KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid!) that we (programmers) apply in our programs applies in real life also. It seems life is like a computer programming decision, yes or no. Prioritize problem to be done, benchmark how fast it can be done so you can tackle another problem.

Simplicity becomes complex if you don’t make it simple.
